David’s Advances (2 Samuel 11:2,4)

David succumbed to temptation by pursuing Bathsheba. But what role did Bathsheba play in all this? Did she bear any responsibility? After all, Bathsheba had elected to bathe where it was possible for her to be seen. Had she been more modest, she probably would have taken measures to keep her bathing more private. Yet at the same time, it’s possible she expected the king would be gone in battle. She didn’t know he would see her from his rooftop.

And why didn’t she refuse David’s summons to the palace? It’s possible she didn’t know David’s intent when he sent his messengers to bring her back to him. But when David began making romantic advances to her, nothing is said in Scripture to suggest Bathsheba resisted. Was she lonely or in a loveless marriage? Was she enamored by the king and the thought that he demanded her presence? Was she flattered by David’s desire for her? Was she simply afraid to say anything because he was the king? Because there is nothing that indicates she declined David’s romantic overtures, there’s a possibility she went along willingly.
